Weight gain is one of the symptoms of the menopause. On an average about 10 pounds weight is gained after menopause. During menopause because of weight gain a woman’s over all shape is also changed and effect can be seen on other parts of body. But it does happen almost with all women suffering from menopause. During menopause weight gain, a fatty layer accumulates around belly. It is not harmful but a woman does undergo a weight gain after menopause. It is natural process for a woman who is undergoing from menopause that she faces weight gain during menopause. But women who face the early menopause or surgical menopause gain weight more rapidly than woman suffering from natural menopause.

Some hormones are involved in weight gaining process after menopause; estrogen is a female sex hormone which is used to control the monthly ovulation. During menopause estrogen level rapidly decreased so the ovulation process stops. Estrogen plays a vital role in gaining weight during menopause. Body needs high estrogen level but the ovaries produce low estrogen during menopause. Fats play an important role to produce estrogen. That’s why body concentrates on fats to produce estrogen so the body of a woman converts all the calories into fats.

Progesterone is another hormone responsible for weight gain. The decreased level of progesterone increases blotting and water retention. You feel yourself bulky because of water retention but this problem is automatically solved after few months.

Androgen another hormone also plays an important role for weight gain during menopause. Testosterone is a hormone, which restrict accumulation of calories in muscles. During menopause decreased level of this hormone affects the activity of muscles. So during menopause weight gain hrt (hormone replacement therapy) exercise can be the solution for menopause weight gain.

It is very difficult to control menopausal weight gain but there are some tips, which will be helpful to control the weight gain during menopause:

1. Eat a balance diet that should be rich in fruits and vegetables.
2. Avoid caffeine, smoking and alcohol.
3. Don’t loose a large amount of weight just make yourself fit; your weight should be according to your height and age.

4. Exercise is always best to reduce or maintain weight so do aerobic exercises to maintain your weight and increase your metabolic rate.

Increasing your weight can cause many other problems like heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and diabetes. Weight gain after menopause can increases the chances of breast cancer in women having 20 pound increase in weight. You can avoid weight gain by little change in your life style. Increase your physical work, reduced the amount of calories intake and low fat diet can avoid weight gain during menopause. Menopause weight gain can happen with those women who use contraceptive pills for birth control. These pills also change the hormonal activities. By the use of birth control pills about 4 pounds of weight gain can be seen during three months. Birth control pills change the activity of progesterone. There is a link between the birth control pills and weight gain but the situation varies from one person to another.
